CHECK_M V1.0 SHAREWARE. POP3 For STiK.
Made by kellis(04/97)
1) Preview
This program is an on-line mail checker. It allows you to check any
new mail without thinking about it. Every X minutes CHECK_M will connect
to your POP3 server and verify if any new mail came. If yes, a window
will popup on your screen saying "From" and "size"; from there, you
can ignore it or view it.
2) Technical
To run CHECK_M:
-your computer must have at least 500kb free for CHECK_M.
-your provider must have a POP3 server.
-you must initially edit your stik configuration file to include at
least the parameter "POP_HOST". (It is also suggested to include
these 2 parameters "POP_USERNAME" and "POP_PASSWORD".)
-CHECK_M will run happily under a singletasking OS, however a
multitasking OS is recommended.
-you must run CHECK_M as an ACC if you use a singletasking
OS, If you use MiNT or Magic, please run it as a program. To do
so, just rename the program extension either "PRG" or
"ACC". (If "ACC", copy all the files to your boot partition)
-make sure CHECK_M as an "ACC" will load after STiK.
Tricks:
-If you click on "Cancel" from the "Set prefs" window, CHECK_M
will read the default POP3 parameters.
-There are No SAVE preferences, because CHECK_M saves it
everytime you click on OK.
-CHECK_M will always start by displaying the
latest email in the inbox. If you choose the option "Check
recent email" before your "first" mail comes, CHECK_M will then
grab all the titles/headers from your inbox, not only the most
recent one checked by CHECK_M.
-If you click on "Read the first 10 lines" CHECK_M will display
them directly because they are already in RAM.
-In the file CHECK_M.INF, the last line is for the sound system.
-Set it to 0 for no sound at all when CHECK_M gets a new mail.
-Or set it to 1, to use the system bell. (ST without DMA for
instance).
-Or set it to 2, to play the AVR sample with your DMA.
(this sample has to be placed in the same directory where
CHECK_M is, and has to be called EMAIL.AVR)
N.B: In short, if you set your computer correctly and have the
correct software and enough RAM, on a Ste 4 meg, no multitasking, you
can be online, constently checking for new mail, talking on IRC, and
still have enough to have your desktop available and ready to run
other applications simultaneously. (you can thank the ACC if you only
have a singletasking OS). :)
Restrictions:
-If you want to view your mail under a singletasking OS, you
must have STENO loaded as an ACC. Under a Multitasking OS,
you can choose just about any viewer or text editor,
"1STGUIDE" for example, or "Everest"...etc. (Not all the text
viewers/editors will work, just give them a try).
-In singletasking, you must have CHECK_M window open on the
desktop, not necessarily topped, but at least open to be in
checking mode.
-So far CHECK_M can not get email>30kb. So be aware for binary
email etc.
Archive:
-CHECK_M.INF
-CHECK_M.ACC
-CHECK_M1.RSC
-CHECK_M.DOC
-ICON.RSC
Known bugs:
-If you delete several times the same email from the "Get recent
email", The server will try to erase it several times, thus hmmm
no good :)
-CHECK_M will not check for the filesize if you select "VIEW IT"
only from the dialog "GET RECENT MAIL", so if the email>30kb, it
will bomb.
Note to the users!
CHECK_M is a shareware program but without restriction like most
other sharewares...no keys, no codes, no tricks. If you find yourself
using CHECK_M on a daily basis, it must mean that this software
was worth all the hours that were put into its creation. Perhaps
you would like to see a more developed version or even something
new? I'm up to the challenge! There's no fixed amount to the
donations...enough to buy a new floppy disk or a Big Mac from
McDonald's. ;) The point is if you're willing to register, don't
do it out of obligation or guilt. I'm not that broke. Enjoy
CHECK_M when being on line means having an intravenous hook-up to
the world.
